I haven’t used an RSS reader on my Mac since I starting using an iPad (except for the occasional trip into Google Reader). I really haven’t missed it, in fact I’ve found the iPad to be the perfect for news reading.
Reeder for iPhone and iPad has been my app of choice. I took to the interface immediately and appreciate how it gets out of the way and allows me to just read the news. Its not my intention to discuss the application here, but simply the fact that it’s made consuming the news a great experience.
The beta release of Reeder for Mac has made me realize that while the iPad and iPhone are great devices for reading news, it’s been Reeder all along that has made reading the news so enjoyable for me. All the things that make Reeder great are in the Mac app.
What really excites me (and inspired me to write this post) is what this means for future Mac apps and Mac OSX Lion.
Would this app be the same if Silvio Rizzi had developed for the Mac first? I doubt it. I surmise, creating apps for Apple’s iOS devices allows developers to look beyond what software has done in the past; a kind of software development muse.
This is only the beginning of apps moving back to the Mac. Exciting times are ahead; Mac OSX Lion can’t get here soon enough.
